Reason #4: Why most fitness business fail

I had to think long and hard about how to start this post. 

This content strikes so close to home it’s hard to be sensitive, objective and convincing at the same time. 

I get passionate about this topic. First, because of my personal struggles and how hard it was to overcome this issue. Second, because of how strongly I believe this one issue is what’s really holding most gym owners and trainers back. 

Great people, with the right intentions simply believe, “if you build it, they will come.” 

Nothing is further from the truth for the fitness business. 

In his post for Forbes, Five Reasons 8 out of 10 Business Fail, Eric T Wagner states reason #4: Leadership breakdown at the top (yes — founder dysfunction).

It’s not unique to the fitness industry. EVERY business has this challenge. 

The success of any business depends on the founder, the leader. The business grows in direct relationship to the growth of the founder. Period.

There are many layers to this, but here is one example. 

Nearly all business owners know intuitively they need to grow personally. They buy books, sign up for webinars, subscribe to magazines and sign up for blog feeds. 

Then nothing happens with this information. In most cases it’s not even read, opened or attended. 

Did you know that 87% of people who sign up for a free webinar never show up? 87% according to a leading webinar provider who meticulously tracks every detail of her business. 

People know they need the information.  They sign up for it with the best of intentions. When the event time comes, they get distracted by something else. A bright shiny object gets their attention. A member suddenly has a crisis and needs some attention. And the list goes on. 

Been there, done that. 

And at the end of the day, nothing has really changed. So Sad. 

The solution is almost too simple to believe: Make a decision, starting right now to do things differently. Start small and reserve a few minutes every day to devote to learning and growing. Protect this time. Give it the same priority you would give a member suddenly needing your help.
