Iron Sharpens Iron

Starbucks was designed to be the third place.

First and second places are home and work.

I personally think the gym should be the third place, and for many people it is, but that is a topic for another time.

Being on the road, on a motorcycle, means that Starbucks is my ideal office space. I usually make an extended visit every two or three days.

It’s interesting to see how much life happens at a Starbucks. Earlier today an attractive young couple had an emotional breakup. A couple of business meetings were conducted. An interview for a new employee lasted for a long time. Is that a good sign? 🙂

And something I have never seen before was fairly routine.

Middle age, and older, adults were tutoring students of all ages with their academic studies.

This just did not happen once or twice, but regularly.

The common theme was someone with experience and expertise, teaching, encouraging and rewarding struggling students as they mastered academic challenges.

When we have children who are struggling with a particular subject in school or life, it’s a natural parental reaction to seek out experts to help tutor our child.

When we’re older and have a struggle, we lean on our friends and people we respect.

One of the most exciting changes in recent times is the willingness people have to seek outside help with their goals.

The tutor helps the student with their struggles. And there is a newer version of the tutor becoming more common and that is the mentor.

Both situations are an example of how iron sharpens iron. We become like those we hang around with.

the smart business people look for ideas outside of themselves for help in not only overcoming their struggles (surviving) but equally, if not more important, achieving their goals (thriving).

And yes, you do find some mentoring going on in Starbucks, right alongside the tutoring.

People with experience helping other people by simplifying and clarifying concepts and crafting practical and profitable action plans.
