What Christmas Cards Taught Me About Business

I am not one of those people who are really good at sending out Christmas and Holiday Cards. You know the people who are consistent year after year.

This time of the year I always have so many things to do. It seems crazy to try to add more to my schedule., or at least that’s what I tell myself.

At this time last year, I made a decision while I was writing out my Christmas cards. My decision was to NOT send out cards this season, 2019.

Instead, I decided to send out Thanksgiving cards in 2019. And I wrote that goal down in my plan for 2019.

About a month ago, just before Thanksgiving, I sat down with my pen and stack of cards determined to make my goal happen.

The first thing I noticed was that I really didn’t have time to send the cards out. Interestingly, this was the same feeling I have at Christmas time. I almost decided to wait until the Christmas holiday.

Through perseverance and determination, I charged ahead and got the job done. I was so relieved to get them in people’s homes before the holiday.

As the cards arrived in homes, people started telling me how much they appreciated the cards. Seems it was the only card they received at this time and my card had no competition. 🙂

Today, I am so thankful I followed through on the goal I established and committed to a year earlier.

For years I had wanted to Make the Thanksgiving card a “thing.” But I was never really committed until last year.

And I only knew I was REALLY committed to my goal when I actually did the work of sitting my butt down and following through, even though I really wanted to do other things at the time.

Why was I successful this time in view of all the other times I didn’t follow through on my goal.

The biggest reason is that I thought it through and committed a year ago. Then I stubbornly followed my plan regardless of how I was “feeling” at the time. I made a commitment that focused on doing things differently.

Of critical importance was I put systems in place to hold myself accountable, including hiring a mentor.

Why am I telling you this story? Chances are good that you are just like me when it comes to what you want, your goals, and how you follow through on the work required to make the goals happen. If you see any part of yourself in this story then we are alike in this regard, and I am willing to wager that we are very much alike!

Next year at this time all of us will be reflecting back on the year 2020. The goals we were successful with will be the goals we truly committed to right now.

What goals do you have that you are going to commit to and follow through on for next year?

Decide now, put the systems in place to hold yourself accountable. You will look back on next year with tremendous satisfaction, pride, and “money in the bank.”
