It’s the time of year for all my annual check-ups with health care professionals.
I feel blessed that early in my life I developed a strong interest in health and fitness. The interest became a passion and then most importantly a passion to help other people along on the same journey.
My physicals have all gone very well. I am far from perfect and there things I need to address. I have a plan. All is good.
One very exciting development in the medical community is the access doctors now have to medical records.
My Greenville, SC doctors can see the records from my Rochester, NY doctors and vice versa.
Of course, I can see all the records anytime which is empowering on so many levels.
A huge change in progress right now is the fitness industry is being invited into the medical records system.
My records have an invitation, and a dedicated section to linking my wearable to the medical website.
In both cases, clicking on the link leads me to a “Coming Soon” page. It’s just a matter of weeks and the functionality will be fully operational.
My doctors and anyone else I give permission to, will have access to my medical records including a history of my fitness and health habits.
The implications are staggering.
In our free Executive Report for Fitness Professionals, we reveal that John Hancock Insurance will no longer underwrite health insurance policies unless the client can prove their fitness habits – through wearable technology reporting and records. (I have written about this coming change on a couple of occasions.)
This is just the beginning of a series of changes linking the fitness, insurance, and now the medical world.
The smart gym owner and trainer is, right now, figuring out how to be part of the coming changes. In most cases it means developing a program for wearables.
If you don’t have a program at this point, start by figuring out how many of your people are using wearables right now. Simple observation will get you close. Informally ask people how they use the technology right now. Figure out how you, in your community, can fit into this new trend.
Of course, this is just the beginning.
