How Your Competition Is On The Move

I checked out another new (new to me) gym yesterday.

It’s another major national chain with nearly 1000 locations that has been around for a long time.

I took advantage of the first visit and got in a good workout. On the way out, the salesman gave me the expected pitch. It was very similar to what I have heard many times before. 

Of course, I am thinking to myself all the ways he could improve his pitch, but that was not my purpose in being there. 🙂

This makes two major chains I am checking out at the same time, both are growing, both have good reputations. Both are your competition.

Here is where it gets interesting. I would rate neither as particularly high in the area of programming excellence! 

They are both growing because of their marketing. Before you jump to any conclusions about huge marketing budgets and deep pockets, that you don’t have, let me explain what I mean by marketing.

In its simplest form marketing is the attraction and retention of customers. If your mind jumps to brand awareness as marketing, or paid social media ads, that is not what I’m talking about. 

Both organizations are huge, and they do some national advertising at this point. They can afford it at this point. That kind of marketing is not fueling the explosive growth of one of my test cases. Their growth is a result of the buzz they have created from their customers talking about them. They are clearly outperforming the other in the area of direct response marketing. I am predicting they will continue to do so with me over the next 10 days.

The direct response marketing strategies and tactics they are using, cost very little if anything, and are available to you too!

As much as we don’t want to admit it, having the best program in our community will not fuel our business growth. We must employ some marketing strategies, or we will lose market share rapidly in this exploding economy.

The key is to spend a few minutes every day on your marketing. It’s becoming more and more important. It’s a matter of survival.
