Yesterday, I worked out at the newest YMCA in Rochester, NY. It’s the second-largest YMCA in the world and comes in at 140,000 square feet of space.
That is a lot of space!
The variety of rooms dedicated to specific purposes, like art, music, meditation, reading and community events was mind-boggling. It seems that they literally have something for everyone.
But not everyone was impressed. I heard complaints about the size, the impersonal nature, and the crowded workout areas.
A lot of fitness business owners see a huge YMCA like this as competition. It’s not your competition. Facilities like this actually help your business model.
The people who don’t want a huge facility like this are your market. I’ll write more on that later. But first, I have a challenge for you to work on.
The challenge is to look at the past year, and even the past decade, and answer the following question:
- What goals did you achieve that you can build upon, and what didn’t go well despite the success?
- Where did you fail or come up short this year? How do your failures reflect your courage and enthusiasm? If you didn’t fail, is it because you didn’t set your goals high enough?
- Did you have any areas of business (finances, marketing, staffing, programming, etc) that you became inconsistent with as the year progressed? What are your thoughts on what you could have done to stay more consistent?
- What strengths have you uncovered that you can build upon moving forward?
- What important lessons did you learn this year and how did they help you grow as a business owner and as a person?
- How did your business fit into your life this year? Were you able to maintain a balance between training, family, work, etc?
First, answer these questions as you look over 2019. It should only take 10-20 minutes.
Then take a look over the last decade and answer the same questions again on a different sheet of paper.
It’s important to do this task in the next few days, before the end of the year.
Create a permanent record of your answers. We will use them next week to establish goals for 2020.
