I’m not talking about the lottery in the subject live above.
I am talking about getting results much more probable than winning the lottery.
Creating the right team is the answer to almost all of your business challenges.
The first step in creating the team is to develop a plan and a process.
The local Chamber of Commerce in a city I was working in offered a one-off program called, “Finding and Recruiting Winners.” It was a fascinating program focusing on how to attract, find, recruit, train and retain winners.
Winners were defined as people who get things done. People who accomplish what they set out to do, who are wired to achieve goals. People who thrive on accomplishment and growth, both personally and organizationally.
It was one of the most significant two-hour training events I ever attended. Entering the room, it reminded me of those college lectures during my freshman year at college and I was skeptical at best. It was a beautiful sunny spring evening after a long and brutal northern winter and I questioned my decision to spend my time this way.
Within minutes, I was riveted to my chair as the trainer exposed the material and concepts of finding winners to become part of an organization.
It was as though the presenter had crafted his material for me exclusively. I was so engrossed in the content that I lost the concept of time altogether. It was as though the trainer was speaking directly to me. It felt like he had asked me what I needed to hear, and had prepared the lecture for me.
I took notes as fast as I could write. I kept and reviewed my notes for years. Most importantly, I have never forgotten the principles taught in the workshop.
Here are the concepts taught in the workshop
● Winners must win, it’s in their DNA, it’s what they are wired to do
● Winners are already in situations where they are working and winning
● If you want a winner on your team, you must go find them, dig them out of the woodwork
● If you want to retain a winner, you must provide an environment where they can win
● Winners want to be part of the solution, seek their ideas and help when facing problems
● If a winner determines that they can’t win where they are, they will move on quickly to a place where they can win
The timing of this workshop was perfect for me. I was a very young Executive with a huge challenge in from of me to turn an organization around quickly. I was making progress but at a pace slower than what I knew I was capable of.
I knew a huge part of my problem was the team I had recruited to help me. I knew I owned the problem.
This was the beginning of the end of tough times. Ahead of us was four years of impressive growth and success.
Our success started with a strategy to implement everything I learned in this workshop. Although I got a lot of credit for the turnaround, I was only part of the solution.
The team I had assembled is what changed the course of the business forever.
