The Dumbest Marketing Ever

Today these companies still exist, and gym owners still buy their pitch. Only now the company does even more damage because they can add the internet to their efforts.

Not everyone I talk to becomes a 6 Figure Trainer client.

No surprise here. We are not for everybody.

When we talk, they really are looking for something and someone to help them get new results. This is a very smart move on their part.

After the conversation, I often wonder what happened to them. Did they find someone and turn the corner once and for all? Did they go out of business? Are they still struggling?

Yesterday I got and answer to what happened to one of my potential clients.

I found out in an email sent to my inbox. The email contained a discounted offer for a membership at this particular gym. Then I received another email offer.

This is one of the dumbest things I see. for two reasons

I have never seen, or heard of, price discounting effectively building a fitness business, and I have been around a long time. Long before the internet, “marketing” companies would come into town and run their version of a campaign for you. It always involved discounting, mass mailing, follow ups and a sense of urgency with a deadline.

The marketing company took at least 50% of the revenue, usually more. And they left town to never return. They left behind, less than ideal new members who made decisions on price alone, frustrated existing members, a boatload of work for the owner, and a tarnished reputation in the community.

Today these companies still exist, and gym owners still buy their pitch. Only now the company does even more damage because they can add the internet to their efforts.

It’s a snake oil pitch. So dangerous that it can put you out of business. There is no thought to the campaign and a lot of wasted energy.

Take me for instance. I live 1000 miles away. Do they really think I will take advantage of this offer? The fact that I am on their list indicates how carelessly this campaign was designed.

Discounting – don’t do it! By the way I have seen some people have to permanently close their business after campaigns like this and beware, in some states there are legal implications if you cash in like this!

Instead find someone to help you grow the business in a sustainable way. Don’t be shy, we all need help to grow our businesses. Explore programs that promote your growth in sustainable ways. It will be so much faster, rewarding and profitable.
