When I was much younger, one of my two favorite Uncles, made an announcement one year that he was no longer buying Christmas presents from that day on.
I thought it was weird and it was certainly the “talk of the family” for a while.
As he announced his decision, I did wonder what the following years would be like. Up until that point he had always given us a nice and thoughtful gift, only one gift. His gifts were so thoughtful, they are the ones I still remember years later.
As the years went by, he was still there on Christmas and, true to his word, he enjoyed us all opening the gifts from other members of the family.
We all enjoyed his presence and his words of encouragement.
He made memories for us.
As I reflect years later, my favorite memories of the holidays are of the people, their words, and attitudes of love and joy.
