The Rhythm of the Seasons

I grew up working on a farm.

The saying “make haste while the sun shines.” made a lot of sense.

Many of the farm chores required daylight and good weather.

There was a rhythm to the seasons, and the requirement for human labor followed the seasons. Long hard hours in the growing season and much shorter hours during the dormancy of winter.

An alarming number of people, in my opinion, treat the holiday season as a period of relative dormancy for the fitness industry.

I used to think that people aren’t interested in joining a fitness program until January.

I was wrong with my thinking. I fell into the attitude of thinking there was nothing I could do that would grow my business, so why not wait for the January crush. Surely it would make up for any lack of growth in December.

Funny thing happened. January never made up for a lackadaisical December. Never.

I learned something very important.

The slowness of December was largely in my head.

Once I understood where the problem really was, I looked at December very differently.

December became the month I made my “BIG MOVES.”

I adopted new beliefs and behaviors, and the results were nothing short of astonishing. Here’s what worked for me, and I know it will work for you.

  1. Approach December as an opportunity that most of my competition will miss completely. This mindset helped keep me on track throughout the month.
  2. Keep the mindset that all my marketing efforts would pay off, either in December, or they would be seeds for my January crop.
  3. Use my current members as important parts of my marketing plans. My customers had friends that needed my services.
  4. Take advantage of the energy of the holidays. Offer special promotions and incentives without ever using price-cutting strategies.
  5. Plan some personal time off in January, as a reward for my December work-ethic.
  6. Perhaps most important, I aligned myself with a mentor who firmly believed the holidays were filled with incredible opportunity. Association with my mentor became my secret power.

There are more things you can do, but this gets you started.

I teach this to my clients.

Charles, one of my clients added 50k to his next year by staying focused during the holidays. Prior to this success, he was adamant that no-one would join his gym in the month of December!
