Many people are convinced the coronavirus (COVID-19) is blown way out of portion. It might be.
It appears that most fitness business owners believe the coronavirus (COVID-19) has been blown way out of portion. They may be correct.
As business owners dealing with people, it doesn’t matter what we think or believe in this situation.
In some countries around the world, business owners have been required to close their business for the time being. Fortunately, we are not there at this point and we still have control of our business.
In this situation, what matters is what our members, clients, and customers think.
If our customers think there is a potential danger in attending our programs, they will stay away. And they will likely try to convince their friends to do the same.
As crazy as it may sound there is a positive opportunity in all of this. The businesses that show the most concern for the customer’s safety and security will earn high marks in the customer’s minds now, and that will carry into the future when the dust settles and lives return to normal.

Your next step is to anticipate and create a plan for more social distancing in your programs.
- Use your War Room to think and plan how you could offer group programs virtually to people at home.
- Put your leadership in place to manage virtual classes. Define roles and responsibilities.
- Take your top two ideas in #1 and practice using the technology and leadership, so you are prepared and up and running on short notice if need be.
- Practice, practice, practice.
- Further options to consider: Is this a good time to offer smaller size group classes? Is this a good time to offer personal training, or upgrade your personal training program?
- Communicate appropriately with your members and customers to assure them you have a plan(s) if needed to keep them engaged and healthy.
Above all, do not alarm them or add panic to the situation. Frequent, brief and consistent communications help a great deal to assure people.
