I am in the Everglades National Park for a few days of downtime.
It’s very quiet and there is no cell phone service – nada.
I got up before sunrise to go for a walk along the Florida Bay Beach.
I had no objective in mind, except to experience the early morning and discover what was there.
I was inspired to share a quick thought with you.
In business I see all kinds of people who don’t really know what they are looking for.
For all of us in the people business our success depends on working with people as customers, suppliers, and team members for starters.
But how many people can clearly articulate what they are looking for? And are these traits and characteristics printed in a shareable form somewhere? This is a huge step that almost magically opens doors when the opportunity presents itself.
My favorite definition of luck is when preparation and opportunity cross paths. The part of this equation we have total control over is preparation. Preparation provides us with the answer to the question of knowing what we are looking for.
Let’s start at the top, your organization. Want a bigger organization? Want to change your organization? Want to modify your organization?
The first step is to sketch it out in an organizational chart. The second step is to create the titles and job descriptions for your future organization. Commit to this task, establish a deadline and work on it every day to meet your deadline.
Once this task is completed, you have a good idea of what you’re looking for in order to change your business. If over time, you change your mind simply go back to the drawing board and restructure your plans, again in writing.
Having completed this work will bring you a sense of direction and a peacefulness. You will be prepared when opportunity strikes.
I will get up early again for a walk tomorrow, but now I will be prepared to look for some specific things, unique to the National Park.
Remember: You only get results if you act on your ideas. Do it now!
