The Jerk Running The Red Light

This email is very personal.

I never expected to attend the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. It was not on my bucket list.

But this year I found myself in Sturgis at the time of the Rally, and I became intrigued.

First, the Rally is not what I expected in many ways.

Yes, the downtown area is crazy with people and motorcycles. Outlying towns for miles around have their own events. It becomes clear that it’s impossible, and unnecessary to attend all the events.

Yet, I made two trips to the downtown area. Temporary stoplights and stop signs are everywhere. Traffic crawls at a snail’s pace.

Still, to my surprise, a guy ran a traffic light.

That guy was me. Ouch! Thankfully, everyone stopped and no one got hurt.

But I was on the receiving end, rightfully so, of a lot of yelling and cursing.

I deserved it! 🙁

Frankly, I was very embarrassed. I had made a big mistake. I wanted to apologize to everyone, but that was not possible.

Sooner or later all of us make mistakes in our business or our lives. It’s part of being human.

We may have said the wrong things to someone or misunderstood someone and reacted poorly.

Worst of all we may be our own worst enemy and entertain negative thoughts in our own head. We all do this.

Mistakes can lead to fear and doubt, our worst enemies of all time. Mistakes can paralyze us from going after what we really want.

The only thing stopping people from going after their goals is fear and doubt. Master these two and you’re on your way to the life you truly want, not the one you are leading by default.

It’s a natural part of the process for a human to make mistakes on the road to the best version of themselves, and the best version of their business.

Step number one is to let it go. Recognize the mistake for what it was, a mistake, and move on. Dwelling on it will cause more problems and more mistakes. It can and will hold a business back.

Although embarrassed, and completely humbled, I had to let my mistake go. There was another stoplight in 50 yards, and I needed to be focused.

Believe in yourself, make mistakes, forgive yourself for the mistake, and keep moving forward!

None of us is perfect. We don’t need to be.

Remember, you only get results when you take immediate action on your ideas.
