The Mental Crisis Hits Home

For years I have made it a habit to not watch the daily news.

It’s simply too negative and discouraging.

A good friend who is very successful in all walks of life shared the same philosophy and reminded me that I was missing nothing on many occasions. He also told me that something was really important, at least five people would share this bad news before noon.

I soon learned he was correct.

Some news channels do make a feeble attempt at sharing positive helpful things from time to time.

ABC’s morning show comes to mind. For instance last week they had a weekly focus on mental health. Each day they had a segment relating to mental fitness.

Unless we live under a rock, almost all of us would agree that this has become a huge challenge facing the country in the last few years.

People are starving for connection.

Once again, the fitness industry is ideally suited to address this issue hugely and profoundly.

People come to our programs for a variety of reasons, and the sense of community is among the top, although not everyone talks about it.

It’s time to add this aspect of health to the conversation.

Sadly, there are not a lot of good examples to model.

On the other hand, it’s another chance to be pioneers and get creative.

Do you have a “bring a friend” week at your facility? If not, it’s a good time to start one! Only this time, let’s talk about what the benefit to our people really is, building a sense of community.

How about hosting a special workshop on mental health, free to your constituents and their friends. Unless you are uniquely qualified to lead a workshop like this, get someone credentialed from the community to lead the workshop. or better yet, a panel of experts.

Mental health used to live in the closet where no one dared talk about it.

Times have changed, and we can, and need to talk about it.

Be bold, be brave, be a trailblazer, and embolden your marketing with testimonials and evidence of your program’s success with mental health issues. It’s good for your customers, which is good for your business.

Who knows what other great things might happen? After all, these are the people who are featured on the Morning Show.

If you would like to talk about more specific actions you can take, get on my calendar and we’ll talk. It’s free to you.

Remember, you only get results when you take immediate action on your ideas.
