Seeing wildlife and cattle on our Continental Divide Trail ride was a daily occurrence.
We were often in open range areas and the scenery changed with every turn.
On one occasion, a dozen head of cattle were in the road, and as usual, we slowed down immediately.
As we crawled forward on our motorcycles the cattle kept moving down the road closer and closer to the Cattle Guard, which is specifically designed to prevent cattle from going past the guard.
Not wanting to corner them against the barrier, we slowed to barely a crawl.
They seemed to appreciate our concern, yet they lingered by the Guard, which is an intentional barrier that they will not cross.
Suddenly, one of the younger cows broke from the group and ran towards the Guard.
With considerable effort, she gained speed and simply jumped right over the Guard!
Her body was not designed like a deer and her jump was far from graceful, but she cleared the obstacle.
To our amazement, she had dug deep and succeeded at something that she was not supposed to be able to do.
We all have obstacles in life and business.
Some we can anticipate and some come as a complete surprise.
How we respond to obstacles is of paramount importance.
Sometimes we are cornered with no apparent options. Often the challenge is designed with the specific purpose of stopping our forward movement.
We can have choices. We can turn back as we perceive the obstacle is too difficult to overcome. Or, we can gather up everything we have, face the obstacle head-on, and go for it.
A predictable thing happens when we cut off all alternatives and options, and go for it with everything we’ve got. We succeed.
The cow above did not jump over the moon. It took a massive chance and made it to the other side of the Guard.
What a great lesson for all of us.
