After competing in the World Championship Triathlon in Kona Hawaii for the last time, I took a few weeks off to relax and enjoy the Hawaiian Islands.
My efforts to become an overnight sensation as a surfer ended in disaster, but that’s a story for another time.
I fell in love with the island of Maui, especially the little town of Lahaina, where I enjoyed great food at the Oyster Bar.
The Oyster Bar is long gone.
In fact, that entire block of buildings has been burned to the ground. It’s a sad reality for the residents and business owners.
Listening to the interviews of the residents is very interesting. Despite the terrible conditions they are facing, all of the people interviewed displayed remarkable resolve and optimism.
We all face unexpected challenges in our personal and business lives. How we respond to those challenges is critical. Being a victim is a surefire way to become a bigger victim.
A positive attitude in light of any circumstance is the best way up and out of any challenge.
To most people, this makes sense on the surface at least. Some will speak the world of resolve, and fewer will actually follow through.
Disasters oftentimes bring out the best in people.
But what if we are not facing a disaster of this magnitude? What if we face a smaller obstacle, or what if we simply want to change the course of our life, or our business?
It’s all the same. For a lasting solution, we need to dig deep into our reserves, despite not facing an external disaster of national magnitude.
When we treat our decision to change with the same resolve and energy we have in a major crisis, we will persevere and become victorious on the other side.
It’s that simple and that difficult.
We are the only creature on earth that can wake, decide to have a different future, and make that vision a reality.
Have a big goal that you really want and are ready to work for? Treat it like you would if you were facing a major disaster like the one on the island of Maui.
You will succeed!
Remember, you only get results when you take immediate action on your ideas.
