It took me a while, but I figured out I could charge twice what any other trainer in my city was charging.
Initially prospects seemed shocked, but I never lost a client based on my fees.
One client was an elderly woman in her 70s and she grumbled a lot about what I asked her to do. I knew at the end of her 10 pre-paid sessions I would fire her. (There is another huge lesson here, for another time.)
Although I already knew the answer, one day I asked her how she got up off the toilet.
She was shocked at my boldness in asking such a question, but eventually admitted that she couldn’t without something to pull herself up with.
She was embarrassed about this reality and went on to tell me how much it affected her social life. She loved to go to her friends’ houses and play cards.
The first thing she always did was to check out her host’s bathroom. If there was nothing to pull herself up with, the stay would be short. Longer if she could find a towel rack or something to use as a crutch.
I told her if she would do what I was asking, soon she would be able to get up off the toilet unassisted, with ease.
She snarled back, that IF that happened, it would be worth all the money she was paying me.
But, suddenly she started paying attention and doing the minimal homework I assigned her. I had her attention.
Two weeks later she took me aside and excitedly told me how happy she was with the results. Crutches were no longer needed!!!
I smiled. She hugged me. We finished our session for the day.
I never saw her again, but I smile every time I think of her.
Today I look at business owners and wonder how they have time for their families, their hobbies, and their own workouts.
I wonder how they have the money to live a reasonable life.
I wonder how long they can keep up their frantic pace.
I know it doesn’t have to be this way. I know they can have all the money and time they need from their business, to do whatever they desire.
Sadly, most of the time, they find this very hard to believe.
I get it. I was once there too. But it is possible and now it’s easier than ever.
