I am not a huge football fan. Never have been.
At the risk of sounding shallow, I have gravitated to the home town teams, wherever I have called home.
I am, however, a huge playoff fan. I love the stories of human struggle, overcoming seemingly insurmountable obstacles, and emerging victorious.
Who doesn’t love these stories. It gives us hope and encouragement that we, too, can overcome the daily struggles of our lives.
We see the victory and we see ourselves in that victory.
What we don’t see are the struggles and loneliness of the daily grind of preparation.
According to Vince Lombardi, we all have the will to win.
But only a fraction of those people have what is really necessary to win, which is the will to prepare to win.
This sounds like work and it is. It’s not sexy, and certainly not a lot of fun unless it’s in a movie, such as Rocky.
Yet it’s the most important ingredient for success.
In the fitness industry, we all want to have massive, exponential growth for all the right reasons. Paying bills, enjoying life, and having quality time with our family.
We get excited and commit to a goal, such as growing our membership by 50%, which by the way, is very doable. But in most cases, in my 40+ years in this industry, I have seen little attention paid to figuring out how to grow the membership by 50%.
This is where the lack of preparation Vince Lombardi talks about comes full circle.
Figuring out how to grow the membership by 50% and then doing all the little action steps in the plan consistently over days and weeks is what Lombardi calls the will to win.
Without a plan and the will to execute the plan, the goals will not happen. The opposite is not only true, it’s a guarantee.
Just last week a VIP client of mine had a 58% increase in attendance in her signature program in 11 days! She will be repeating this plan every month for the next 14 months.
It’s pretty certain by the end of the 14 months, she will have doubled the number of people in her program. She and her staff are doing the work, the work to prepare to win, and they will.
