5,000,000 Meters And Counting

Today, just minutes ago, I accomplished a goal and can now proudly say I have rowed over 5 million meters on a Concept 2 Erg!

This goal took more than a few years to accomplish, and I actually did not start out with this goal.

But over time, one thing led to another and this became a goal that needed to be accomplished, and I am so glad I finished it up.

Now to celebrate.

Celebrations like this did not come naturally to me, but as I grew in the fitness industry, I realized how critically important it is to celebrate accomplishments. When we celebrate the milestone, we cement the success in our brains which helps with the next, more lofty goal.

In the fitness business, celebrating our clients’ successes is an incredibly powerful tool that builds community in our tribe of customers and clients. The celebrations build our culture and a strong culture keeps our people together, which is good for business, and inspires our people to even loftier goals, which is good for everyone.

Why do so few fitness businesses take advantage of this huge opportunity?

Oftentimes the business owner is so busy on the day-to-day operations, where they put all their energy, that they simply don’t carve out the time for the celebrations.

I was guilty of this for years.

Then I learned that a little investment of time spent celebrating my customer’s victories paid off in huge ways.

Although there are many ways to have a celebration, one of the easiest is to have a way for people to report in on Mondays.

In my gyms, Monday was a day for people to report to the class their weekend accomplishments, This occurred during the warm-ups when everyone was encouraged to report to the group what they had done over the weekend.

Everyone’s report was always greeted with a round of applause. It was impossible to not notice the smile on the face of the person giving their report as the group erupted in applause.

I am convinced some people would go out and do something over the weekend, just so they had something to report on Monday.

Recognition can become an addictive drug.

As for me, I’ll be bragging on Social Media. It’s not quite the same as a live report, but it comes close.
