I was fortunate to become a YMCA Executive Director at a very young age.
We had a huge facility, about 100 people on the staff and 100s of members, and I was ultimately responsible for the entire operation. .
When she wasn’t in school my young daughter would “volunteer” to help the receptionists at the front desk.
One day she asked me what my job was. I was somewhat amused by the question from this 8-year-old, and I asked her what she thought my job was.
Her answer surprised me. First, she went on to identify various people on my team and she accurately described what they did. When it came to me and my job she said, “as far as I can tell, all you do is talk to people all day long.”
That got my attention. From her innocent perspective, she was absolutely correct. Every day consisted of a lot of talking.
But what was my real job? Why all the conversations? What was my daily objective, goal, and mission? What was the value of my role to the organization?
It’s the same with any CEO, President, Founder or whatever title you choose for the primary leader.
The role of the leader of any business is to develop the resources of the organization.
Those resources (in random order) are:
The finances
The staff team
The program
The facilities
The marketing plan
The community
The organization’s leadership (this means the owner/primary leader)
Managed correctly, these are the resources, when properly developed, guarantee the business’s success.
The primary leader’s role is so often misunderstood in the fitness business.
Teaching classes and training people is NOT the primary role of the business owner. The sooner the owner realizes this truth, the sooner the business starts to grow.
