This is President’s Day weekend.
You may or may not celebrate the weekend, but it’s a great time to reflect on how great a nation this is. For those readers outside the USA this email still applies to your business. Bear with me.
The lesson we have learned from every President, and it’s a good one for our businesses, is that when a President takes office, and in effect begins a new government, they all take it very seriously.
They create a Transition Team and follow a plan.
You might be thinking what the heck does this have to do with my business.
Whenever we go through a massive change in a small business, we are essentially working our way through a massive change process.
People don’t like change. It’s unsettling and disruptive on so many levels.
Take, for instance, adding a General Manager to your team. Especially if someone has risen through your employee ranks to a new role as a General Manager.
This happened to me several times when I was still working for “the man,” rather than leading my own business.
Trust me, everything changes when a new role/person is added to an existing organization.
Group dynamics are changed, and in very profound and important ways.
For now I want to focus on the practical side of the quiet evolution/revolution of adding a new role.
The Presidents have a plan. It’s the same plan top level CEOs use. It’s the same plan small business and fitness leaders, who at their core are people-businesses serving people, should use.
The plan: Put a Transition Plan in place.
The transition plan creates a process to make the transition for the organization smooth and seamless. A good plan eliminates confusion, clarifies roles, answers questions before the questions are asked, soothes nerves, quiets the herd, and more.
Each situation has its unique circumstances and the Transition Team saves a tremendous amount of time in the end.
When would you use a Transition Team? Any time you make a significant change in your organization.
