I was headed out on a long trip across a new trail in the desert yesterday.
I studied the maps and noticed I was about to cross some red sections on the map, sections are colored red because they are considered very dangerous.
I had both a paper map and a downloaded, interactive map on my phone. On the motorcycle, the phone is mounted on the handlebars, but there is too much vibration on the ATV for this convenience.
I stopped and checked the map as I entered the steep mountains. I felt a sense of relief knowing the tough section was quite a distance away.
On the trail, I met some other riders and decided to follow them to an elevated location known as “lookout point.” Then I would decide if I wanted to continue to the tough section or turn around.
This turned out to be quite a climb. I am not going to lie, I was afraid (terrified?) of some of the obstacles, but hey, they were ahead of me at the observation point looking down at me. 🙂 (What could possibly go wrong, right?)
If they had done it, I could too, this was the thought that motivated me to overcome my fears with each and every huge rock I had to climb.
I felt such a sense of relief and accomplishment as I pulled up alongside of them. I was humbled and at the same time, very proud of what I had just done.
After collecting my wits, I became very concerned about the tough part ahead.
My new friends and I parted ways and I headed down the mountain very concerned about the trail ahead.
I continued for two miles on what was one of the easiest trails I have ever ridden. Finally, I pulled over and checked the online maps to see where the heck this dangerous area was.
Shock!!!
It was two miles behind me and I had already, unknowingly, gone through it!!
I couldn’t believe it at first, but then it settled in.
Despite my fears, I had done it!!
