Is Fear Holding You Back?

I took a break a couple of days ago from visiting clients and gyms and did this bucket-list thing.

I decided to ride my fully-loaded motorcycle up Mt Washington in New Hampshire.

The road is narrow, twisty, steep and without guardrails. It is paved except for a section about a mile in length which is dirt.

Most sections of the road are not marked with lines and there is no shoulder at all. Go off the road and, well, it’s a long way down.

The signs at the bottom of the mountain caution travelers to avoid this road if they have a fear of heights. Great advice!

I would love to tell you I was not intimidated, but that would be a lie. I do have a fear of heights.

And I have a fear of not living my dreams.

I found myself a mentor. He was a guy sitting on a rock looking at the mountain. Something told me he knew this mountain and he was obviously a local resident. I started a conversation and he quickly built up my confidence and shared some stories of his numerous trips up the mountain.

My dreams were stronger than my fear as I paid my fee and headed up the mountain.

The worst part of the ride was not the heights, lack of guardrails, not the absence of markings. My new mentor had me prepared for those. Those known obstacles were frightening for sure, but the biggest problem was the other car drivers.

They would stop for no apparent reason, except fear, on a very steep section of the road. It’s not possible to pass which would back up all the traffic behind them. Starting a loaded motorcycle on a 15-degree slope in the strong wind above timberline is no easy task as I quickly learned.

But I got through it and made it to the top.

This whole adventurer reminds me of building a business.

When we decide to make our business a real business with profits, it’s a scary idea.

The successful people find a mentor and take action, not because of a lack of fear, but they act in the face of fear.

The biggest problem coming down the mountain? Cars in the center of the road too afraid to stay in their own lane. And the smell of overheated car brakes. 🙂
