Having grown up near the Canadian border in Upstate New York I had never seen an alligator or a crocodile before. Those creatures were literally over 1,000 miles away.
On my travels through southern Florida this winter sighting these reptiles was high on my list.
The Alligator was easy. They seem, at least to me, to be very plentiful.
The Crocodile was another issue, and I soon learned that they are native to the southern parts of Everglades National Park.
My curiosity grew and I asked a ranger in the Everglades National Park where I might see a Crocodile and what they look like.
He pointed out the best spot and told me to look for something that looks like a log in the water.
Soon, I was seeing Crocodiles.
Good employees, the ideal ones, are in my experience very unique and somewhat rare.
They are out there, but we have to know exactly what we are looking for, or we will miss them.
So how do you know what to look for?
The best way is to create an avatar of the ideal employee for the position you want to fill. If you already have someone doing an outstanding job in the role, start there and list out the characteristics that make this person outstanding.
Don’t be surprised when the majority of outstanding characteristics are soft skills.
Make your list permanent by committing it to a written (printable) record.
Remember: You only get results if you act on your ideas. Do it now!
