The 120 Things I Don’t Miss (and the Business Lesson Hidden Inside)

I’ve always thought of myself as someone who doesn’t have a lot of material possessions. But a couple of weeks ago, I took a good look around and realized it was time to downsize.

So, I set an arbitrary goal: get rid of 100 things.

As of today, I’m at 120. And here’s the surprising part—I don’t miss a single one of them.

Even better, I’ve discovered that having fewer things gives me clearer focus and fewer distractions. It feels lighter, sharper, more intentional.

The Fitness Business Parallel

This got me thinking about how similar the process is for business owners—especially in the fitness space.

One of the biggest complaints I hear from gym owners and trainers is: “I just don’t have enough time.”

But let’s be honest: we all have the same 24 hours. The difference isn’t time itself—it’s how we prioritize it.

Think about this: if a potential member walks through your front door, suddenly you’ve got an hour to spend with them. Yet, when it comes to working on your business (the systems, the strategy, the marketing, the leadership), most people can’t seem to carve out even 20 minutes.

It’s not about time. It’s about priorities.

Human Nature and Distractions

The truth is simple: when people really, really want something, they find the time—and the money—to make it happen. That’s just human nature.

But without a clear goal or a compelling dream, distractions win. And just like clutter in your garage or closet, those distractions pile up until they consume your schedule.

A Weekend Challenge: Free Up Time in Your Fitness Business

Here’s a simple exercise I’d like to challenge you with this weekend:

  1. Take a piece of paper.
  2. Write down the things in your day-to-day that you could eliminate.
  3. Identify where you can free up time to focus on what really matters.

It doesn’t need to be drastic. Even freeing up 30 minutes a day can create the space you need to finally work on the bigger moves that will grow your business.

What’s Next

Downsizing 120 items gave me clarity and focus. Downsizing your distractions could give you the breakthrough you’ve been looking for in your business.

Next week, I’ll share the second half of this lesson: once you’ve freed up the time, how do you stay disciplined enough to actually use it wisely?

In the meantime, if you missed the replay of last week’s mini-masterclass, grab it [here]. It’s less than 10 minutes and will set you up perfectly for what’s coming next.

Final Thought

Focus and discipline are what separate busy fitness professionals from true business leaders. Clearing the clutter—whether it’s physical or on your calendar—is the first step.
