I subscribe to two on-line news services that give me tremendous insights into business, the workplace, and the workforce.
I am sure it comes as no surprise that the employment landscape has changed in very fundamental ways, for both the employer and the employee.
Savy organizations are starting to have marketing programs specifc for employees.
Marketing is no longer just about getting more business.
Direct marketing principles are particularly effective for small businesses, and the same principles apply to employee marketing programs.
Where to start is often very confusing as most of us have employees already.
And your current employees are the perfect starting place for an employee marketing program.
I am not going through all the nine steps in a marketing program right now, instead, I’ll just go right to Step #7 which is to provide a world-class experience for your people.
This means taking your existing workforce and providing a world-class experience for them.
There are lots of reasons to do this, but high on my list is simply this, it’s the way we should treat our employees.
What makes it a world-class experience? I like to ask the employees.
For example in one of our Marketing Make-Over sessions, we had a group challenge. The owner and I decided there should be a reward when the group achieves their rather aggressive and lofty goal.
We asked the employees what would motivate them. The answer surprised me in that what they wanted was a pizza that they could eat together.
A pizza, I thought to myself, is much less than I would have guessed. But my opinion and the opinion of the owners did not matter. The opinion of the employees was all that mattered.
The group went about the challenge. They faced the usual ups and downs of implementing the program and being a little uncomfortable. New things usually are.
That simple pizza became the focal point of conversation when things got tough. It meant a lot to them because it was their choice.
In the end, they were very successful and achieved their lofty goals. But the conversation was all about the pizza that they ate together.
To them, this was a world-class experience.
Remember: You only get results if you act on your ideas. Do it now!
