You and Elon Musk

When virtually addressing the G20 Summit last week, Elon Musk said:

“I have too much work on my plate.”

This is an understandable statement when we consider all he has going on right now.

The problem, and he recognizes it as a problem, is that he can’t continue this schedule for long. If he does he will make huge mistakes.

In the 19th century when labor unions went into effect, limiting the workday to 10 hours, some interesting things happened:

  1. There were fewer accidents in the business
  2. Productivity went up on all levels

Most of us in the fitness industry have too much on our plates.

I was guilty of this at one point, too. And I paid a huge price.

Once I stopped the long, hard hours, and took time off, my productivity went way up, and my business exploded.

The key to being able to work fewer hours is to develop systems that work in the leader’s absence. That’s what I learned and that’s what I teach the people I mentor.

Here’s how to get started:

  1. Pick one task that someone else, besides you, can do.
  2. Create a standard operating procedure.
  3. Follow your own procedure a few times and tweak it as necessary.
  4. Recruit someone else to follow the procedure.
  5. Observe and monitor how they fulfill the task.
  6. Re-tweak the task with input from the person performing the task.
  7. Continue to observe and monitor the person’s performance.

Then rinse and repeat with another task.

This may sound complicated and difficult, but it’s not.
