The Interview – Part 4

I had a great weekend on two wheels in my hometown.

Coming off a mountain on my bicycle, I hit over 40 mph, which I haven’t done in a while.

This particular descent was scary and exciting at the same time.

At that speed, any little imperfection in the pavement gets transferred through the bike to the rider, just like the sweetness of the smooth pavement gets transferred to the rider.

On a bicycle or in business, having a smooth path to follow makes the journey fun.

Hiring staff is only a difficult and stressful task if you don’t have a smooth path to follow. When the path to follow is proven and tested, it’s smooth and fun.

The interview part of the hiring process, Part 4 in this series, should be fun with a purpose.

You need to do three interviews with each candidate personally. Add to that the other interviews your team is doing.

This adds up to a lot of interview times and that is the point.

People always project the best of themselves in the first interview. You get to see more of the real person in the second and third interviews.

The cost of a bad hire is staggering in both wasted time and money. Much of this can be avoided by taking time in the beginning. And being thorough.

If you explain to the candidate from the beginning that this will take some time, you will get very little resistance. And if you do get resistance, this is probably not the candidate for you.

Taking your time is a two-way street. It also gives the candidate time to thoroughly check you and your operation out. It also signals to the candidate that you are taking this process seriously, and they do the same in return. Sometimes they will even decide the job is not for them in which case you have saved yourself a lot of pain and heartache.

Keep in mind that hiring the right people is one of the most important things you can do. the success of your business is literally in the balance.
