A Lesson From 60 Minutes

I try to watch the TV program Sunday Morning every week. They always have something of interest, and their reporting is a bit more positive than the usual news.

Last Sunday they had a feature on Physical Education in the schools, post-pandemic.

While this will be no surprise to any of us, they reported a significant drop in school-age children’s general fitness and their interest in fitness types of activities.

As a result of these changes, today’s Physical Education teachers are forced to change much of their programming. The activities that held their students’ interest, and which they were capable of before the pandemic don’t work in the PE classroom today, post-pandemic. The students aren’t interested and, more importantly, they don’t have the basic skills necessary to participate in the activities successfully.

In short, the successful post-pandemic PE teacher is getting much better results when they focus their programming on purposeful fun activity.

There is a great reminder for all of us here. Our programming needs to have fun and purposeful elements built into every workout.

When was the last time a couple of people told you a workout was fun? When was the last time you or your team explained the purposeful application of a deadlift and how it applied to getting dog food out of the car?

Want to have a lot of fun? Roll out the mats, provide some basic instruction, and have everyone do their best forward roll, or better yet, their best cartwheel. I guarantee people will be talking about that “exercise” for a long time.
