How Often Do You Do A Reality Check

One of my neighbors in the desert recently bought a new RV.

What makes this different and unusual is the size of the RV and my friend’s age, he’s 87.

Moving everything from his old unit to this new one, is a lot of work, more than he can handle.

Fortunately, his neighbors, including me, have happily done the majority of the heavy lifting for this move.

In appreciation, he treated us all to dinner yesterday.

After dinner, with tears running down his cheeks, and his wife’s arms around him, he expressed his gratitude to the group of us. He remarked about how he used to be able to do everything himself, and now he can’t.

This realization was actually a bit of a surprise to me, and the pain of his realization was obvious in his words and expressions.

This was a reality check for him.

The interesting thing about a reality check is that it seems to often come as a surprise when there are clues all along the journey.

In business “reality checks” that come as a surprise, are often accompanied by dire and severe consequences.

More than one gym has gone out of business because the owner ignored warning signs of impending disaster and kept up the pretense that everything was fine.

There are several ways to avoid the shock of a disaster and one is particularly effective, it’s something you can start doing today.

Here’s how it works:

Go to some quiet place where you can be alone. Grab your phone or a camera and video yourself talking into the camera, like they do in the reality shows.

Talk to yourself honestly about how things are going in your business. Hold nothing back and be brutally honest. No one else is going to look at the video unless you choose to share it.

A few hours later, look at the video you created. What do you think about it?

Do this every week for a year. I recommend creating the video on Fridays. What trend lines do you see? Are things going really well, or would it be a good idea to reach out to someone for a perspective?

Have fun doing this. Keep in mind that you are already in the top 5% of business owners, just by doing this task alone.
