It’s a beautiful end-of-summer day in Upstate NY.

Snow season is not too far away now.

Growing up here, I quickly realized who the most important person working for the local town was.

It was NOT the mayor, although politicians want us to think that.

The most important person in the winter is the snowplow driver. If this person does not show up for work we have a problem, a big problem.

The same logic applies to the business world.

A VIP client of mine just returned from negotiating an addendum to his lease.

You can probably relate. His business took a huge hit through no fault of his own during the pandemic and the business survived only because of his ability and willingness to take out a loan.

He never missed a payment to the landlord. (This was before he was a client of mine).

Things are not returning to normal as fast as my client had hoped, and now he has a cash flow challenge with an end in sight several months in the future. He needs temporary help.

We worked hard preparing for a meeting with the landlord and got our “ask” straight in his mind.

Our preparation paid off and he got a “yes” on his request!

To say he was excited is an understatement.

But as the saying goes, the devil is in the details. Our next step was to read every word of the landlord’s proposal.

Sure enough, the proposal did NOT reflect the conversation 100%!

This happens all the time in the business world.

The most important person in a meeting is the one who keeps the minutes. People never remember what really happened, but the notes will stand the test of time.

My client now has to go back to another meeting and get some clarification. We got this!
