Part 4 – Addressing Mental Health In Fitness Programs

I am continuing my motorcycle ride on the Continental Divide Trail with my nephew, heading southbound.

As of this morning, there is snow in the mountains! Just a few days ago there was record-breaking heat!

Riding the trail requires preparation and flexibility, but we seem to have all the boxes checked.

This trip is physically challenging and mentally inspiring.

In the last few issues of this email, I have talked about specific tactics to address mental health in our fitness programs.

Here is another one, and this can be lots of fun!

Much of mental health is about how we focus our mental energy. In my previous posts, I outlined tactics to keep people focused on the positive.

But people are people and sooner or later the negative will emerge from someone. What we do in those situations is critically important

One thing that works really well is to create a penalty for a negative attitude or a negative vibe.

In my gym, if anyone said the word “can’t,” the workout stopped and everyone did 10 burpees. that’s right, 10 burpees for everyone.

We had so much fun with this ritual. Sooner or later it seemed like everyone said the dreaded word, and was mortified to think they caused other people to have to pay the penalty.

Everyone understood the culprit’s feelings because they had been there and done that.

But here’s the thing, no one ever created the infraction more than once. 🙂

Even more importantly, families took this attitude of intolerance for the word home to their families. One woman posted on social media that because of me and the rule in my gym, “Can’t” had become a four-letter word in her family!

You might think this is a bit harsh, and maybe it’s not for you, but to address the negative side of attitudes, and influence mental health, come up with something fun and effective. Make it a tradition, and part of your gym’s culture.

People will appreciate it and love you for it.

If you would like to talk about more specific strategies you can follow to explode your business now, get on my calendar and let’s talk. It’s free to you.

Remember, you only get results when you take immediate action on your ideas.
