The Latest On The GLP-1 Weight-Loss Drugs

I tend to not watch much television, with a couple of exceptions.

The first exception is playoff sporting event playoffs. Having spent a lot of time in Rochester, NY, I pay attention to the Buffalo Bills when they are in the playoffs.

After yesterday’s Wide Right call, I am at a loss for words.

My second exception is that I like to watch the Sunday Morning program and 60 Minutes. They usually have features on things important to me, especially relating to the areas of health and fitness.

Yesterday’s programming had an interesting perspective on the GLP-1 meds.

The most popular GLP-1 drugs, Ozempic and Rybelsus, are in short, wildly popular, and successful.

There are a couple of downsides:

  1. They are expensive.
  2. Insurance only covers about 30% of the prescriptions at this point.
  3. There are no answers on the long-term effects of the meds. For instance, will the weight stay off, after the person discontinues the use of the drugs?

The upside is huge for the user because these drugs work, plain and simple.

There is also an upside for the fitness industry!

In yesterday’s interview with a Doctor, the question of Health Club membership came up. The reporter suggested this is the death knell for the fitness industry. As a reader of these emails you know that is simply an opinion, far from reality.

The Doctor being interviewed responded quite differently. She saw this as an advantage for the fitness industry. Her premise is that as people begin losing weight they feel better about themselves and are more interested in a Health Club membership than when they were heavier.

This is a welcome and interesting perspective. One that I agree with.

In the fitness industry, we need to market and promote our services as much more than weight loss. It’s the truth and it’s something most fitness people don’t promote nearly enough.

Take a quick inventory of your marketing. What is the real message new people get?
