Would You Bet On Yourself

Way back when, I worked for six months with a partner putting together a business plan for purchasing a Health Club.

We worked together for six months without making any money, totally on faith.

We were in for a tough fight and we knew it. Banks, in those days, did not finance Health Clubs and we knew we were a long shot at best.

Six months is a long time and the days dragged on.

Finally, our time to present to the banker arrived and we walked in and proudly presented our neatly organized plan which was about 2 inches thick.

He opened the book and leafed through the pages. A smile came to his face as he obviously approved of our hard work.

Then he unceremoniously put it on the desk and began asking questions. Tough questions that drove deep into the heart of our core beliefs. These questions tested the strength of our belief in ourselves.

Then he reminded us of the reality that Health Clubs were simply too high a risk for banks to invest in. He also mentioned that our verbal answers came from the heart and he knew how strongly we were committed.

As he adjourned the meeting, he told us he didn’t need to keep a copy of the plan.

After a few days, the bank did give us three-quarters of a million for the purchase of the Health Club.

In our final meeting he told us he was betting on us, that whatever came up, we could handle it.

When we start a fitness business we are betting on ourselves.

A business plan is critically important in minimizing our risk and keeping us focused, but even the most carefully constructed business plan may need to be significantly altered and adapted to a new and ever-changing environment.

These necessary changes can be discouraging. If we are not careful these changes can cause a deterioration in our confidence and attitude.

We may lose confidence in ourselves and our plans.

When we lose confidence and are a little off the edge of our belief in what we are doing, it’s time to reach out to a helpline. Books, podcasts, and videos may help.

The best helpline is to talk with someone with experience and expertise who can give perspective, challenge your negative thinking, and get you back on track.
