I attended my high school class reunion over the weekend which was very interesting.
I have not been to a class reunion in years so it had been some time since I connected with most of my class mates, and toured the school.
It was energizing to say the least.
Back in the office this morning one of my clients talked to me about his need to hire a new employee.
He asked several great questions and I want to address one of them. What is the most important thing to do when hiring an employee?
Having been here a number of times, I can assure you the answer is to conduct the hiring process so that you have 3 qualified candidates for the job opening.
The reality is that despite all our hiring techniques and procedures we don’t always get it right.
Here is a little background on the hiring process. 1/3 of the time we hire someone over-qualified, 1/3 of the time we hire the under-qualified, and 1/3 of the time we hit the mark and score. As you can see the odds are against you from the beginning.
When we go through all the steps in our hiring process and persist until we have three candidates, the right choice “floats” to the top.
While it may seem like a lot more work to persist until there are 3 qualified candidates, not making the right choice can be very costly in time and money.
Get it right the first time by finding three qualified people for the job and you’ll thank yourself in months and years to come.
